Dilemma 3: Mom's Rules
Read the story below, and tell us what you would do.
Your mom has a strict rule that your boyfriend cannot be in your bedroom with the door closed.

She made this rule when you had your first boyfriend at age 15. She said this rule would remain implemented until you were in college at which point she will reevaluate the rule.

You're now 17 and will leave for college in a few months. You have respected this "no closed door" rule for the past two years. Your mom knows your current boyfriend very well.

Your mom is out of town for the weekend and left you and your older brother to take care of the house. It's Sunday afternoon and your brother has a few friends over to watch a football game. They're being very loud.

You and your boyfriend would like some privacy.

You go to your room. Do you close the door? Your mom will never know-she isn't even there. But, should you respect her rules even when she isn't home?

Consider these three possible responses -- what would be the most likely result?

If you ... what would be the "pros" and
"cons" of this response?
Close the door and not tell your mom that you did. Don't ask - don't tell, right?
Leave the door open. But then you and your boyfriend realize that the TV is too loud, so you go for a walk instead. When your mother gets home you explain to her the situation and how you didn't want to disobey her, and ask her if next time you can close the door.
Close the door. Feeling guilty, when you mom gets home you explain to her the situation, that you did remember her rule, but thought this situtation was an exception.
What would you do?
