The Moral Dilemma Game
Back to the "Mom's Rules" dilemma

Dilemma 4: Hurtful Promise
Read the story below, and tell us what you would do.
Danny is your best friend. Yesterday you noticed a bruise on his face. He told you that his dad sometimes hits him across the face when he misbehaves.

You told Danny that it is not okay for his father to do that. You tell him that your mom told you that physically hurting someone, even as disipline, is not okay. You also told him how you hope he will tell your teacher, or an authority, about what is going on at home.

You promised Danny that you wouldn't tell anyone. You even pinky swore -- and that's serious.

Yesterday you decided not to think about it, but today it still worries you and you think you would feel better if you told your teacher or your mother about Danny's dad.

But, what about your promise to Danny? What should you do?

Consider these three possible responses -- rate them from 1 (bad response) to 5 (good response).

Possible responses: Rate this response from 1-5 (5 is best).
You tell your mom about Danny's bruise and what Danny told you. At your request, your mom agrees to tell your (and Danny's) teacher that Danny's bruise is not from his little league baseball game. Your mother says she will tell this to your teacher confidentially -- Danny won't find out you broke the promise
You tell Danny that he must tell your teacher. She'll know what to do. You tell him that you'll go with him. But he refuses to go, so you tell your teacher without him. Though it may hurt your friendship with Danny, you know it is the right thing to do.
You encourage Danny to tell his teacher, but he thinks it is best not to. You decide to forget about it. You remind yourself that it really isn't any of your business. You made a promise to Danny. You pinky swore.
What would you do?
